GPT to acquire 50% of Highpoint

GPT Group is set to acquire half of Melbourne's Highpoint shopping centre for $621.2 million, which it says will return higher distributions to investors. The property group, formerly known as General Property Trust acquired a 50 per cent interest and management rights to the Highpoint centre in Maribrynong, from the Besen family.

Owned by Centro Properties Limited, Hames Sharley’s brief was to plan and design a major expansion of The Glen Shopping Centre in Melbourne, bringing it to a total GLA of 49,000 square metres. Nestled under a magnificent glazed dome, the circular atrium space provides the focal point for the existing and new malls. The additions comprise a 15,000 square metre department store (David Jones) and an additional 5,000 square metres of specialty retail tenants. The development spans over two levels to match the existing retail floors and is set above two levels of car parking containing an additional 850 cars.

Since 1998, Hames Sharley, in conjunction with American Architects Altoon + Porter, has participated in, firstly, the preparation of an Urban Design Framework document, then the subsequent design and documentation of major works to the centre. These seek to integrate the existing Knox City and adjacent Towerpoint Shopping Centre via a range of new buildings and precincts. Key elements of the project include Lifestyle and Entertainment precincts, incorporating “High Street” and external mall shopping, dining and promenading.
